Besides playing the role of Chief Executive Officer of Exceed, Dan is a Consultant and Technical Instructor specializing in automated testing and training. Dan's current area of interest include teaching data-driven test automation techniques, C# and ASP.NET from a testers point of view.
Dan Hodge graduated from Oregon Institute of Technology in 1991, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Software Engineering Technology. He began his career as a Software Quality Assurance Engineer at Asymetrix Corporation where after two and one-half years he worked his way up to a Test Lead position. It was in this position that Dan was introduced to software test automation. He was responsible for developing automated scripts using MS Test 1.0 to test several multimedia applications. He then moved on to Windows systems development for an additional two and one-half years, where he used the C and C++ languages to help develop Asymetrix's flagship product ToolBook along with several other multimedia applications.
Dan left Asymetrix in 1996 to take on the role of Visual Test Instructor teaching MS Test 3.0 and 4.0 for ST Labs. Dan became ST Labs' first instructor and was promoted to manager of the training department shortly thereafter. Besides teaching, he was responsible for keeping the courseware updated, and creating the Visual Test 4.0 courseware. Dan left ST Labs to found STA Group (now Exceed Technical Training) with the idea of creating a company dedicated to providing the highest quality of software test training available.
In his six years as a Visual Test instructor, Dan has taught several thousand students, teaching dozens of classes to Microsoft test engineers, plus numerous on-site classes for major corporations including Wang, U.S. Postal Service, Attachmate, Air Products and Chemicals, Hewlett Packard, AT&T and Rational. In addition, Dan has taught classes throughout the world with students attending from major corporations including Intel, Broderbund, Reuters, IBM and many others.
Along with Mary Sweeney, Dan created the Visual Test 6.5 courseware used presently by Exceed and continues to teach classes, in addition to taking on various test automation projects when time allows. In the past he was the automation Test Lead for the Visual Test 4.0b upgrade, a consultant on an internal client/server application for AT&T Wireless, and an automation engineer for an internal Microsoft localization tool. Dan was also the Technical Reviewer of "Software Testing with Visual Test 4.0" and the current "Visual Test 6.0 Bible". He also contributed to the "Visual Test 6.0 Bible" by writing the topic on testing Active X controls. In November 1997, Dan was a guest speaker at the Rational ASQ User Conference where he addressed several technical features of Visual Test.
